Our Bands

Marching Band

During the fall, the Perry High School Band performs as a marching band. The "Pride of the Pirates" performs at varsity football games, the Lake County Music Educators Marching Band Festival, band festivals, parades, area band shows, college football games, occasional overnight trips to festivals/parades and completes the marching band season with a marching band concert.

Preparation for the fall season begins in mid-July with day and evening rehearsals and concludes with a one week band camp at PHS. Band camp dates and times are determined in the Spring. Attendance at band camp is mandatory and required by all marching band and drill team members.

Concert Band

Concert band starts immediately upon completion of football season and continues throughout the remainder of the school year. The concert band rehearses daily and performs at concerts throughout the school year. All performances, often taking place outside normal school hours, are required for those registered for the course, and are graded as summative assessments. Members of the band are also encouraged to participate in the Ohio Music Education Association's Solo and Ensemble Adjudicated Event in January/February.

Members also have the opportunity to audition and participate in other non-credit ensembles such as CVC Honors Band, OMEA District Honors Band, and the Cleveland Youth Wind Symphony. Each year the concert band performs at the PHS Commencement Ceremony. Every four years the band takes a major trip. A high level of musicianship and citizenship is expected of all members. Students must be enrolled in band class during the school day in order to participate in marching band, concert band, jazz band, pep band and Buc band.

Jazz Band

Membership in the Jazz Band is open to all high school band members enrolled in the school-day class. Members must audition on their respective instrument and the size of the group will be determined by the instrumentation needs and the band director.

The band rehearses on Wednesday night in the PHS band room from 5:30pm until 7:30pm. Generally a one hour sectional rehearsal is held once a month. The group allows the members to perform musical literature from the Big Band and Swing Era as well as various other styles of pop and jazz music.

Buc Band

The Buc Band is a group of instrumental performers selected by an audition each Fall to provide the music for the show choir. The group rehearses mostly once a week and performs 20-30 times during the school year throughout our surrounding area and Northeastern Ohio. Membership is open to all students enrolled in the band school-day class and instrumentation is determined by the directors. The group has competed in a number of contests in Ada and Akron, Ohio as well as Toronto, Canada.

Pep Band

Pep band performs at ten boys/girls home basketball games. The group performs pop/marching band style music in a smaller setting. The group performs as needed during the basketball season and membership is open to all high school band members enrolled in the school-day class.

Brass Choir

The Brass Choir is a small brass ensemble of junior and senior band students who are selected to perform select Holiday music at businesses and organizations around the Perry community. The group rehearses during the month of December and performs at the High School Winter Concert and the last day of school before Winter Vacation.
